The Hokkaido University prides itself as the Japan's first national university, established in 1876, then called the Sapporo Agricultural College. Our best known graduates include Kanzo Uchimura (1861-1930, novelist and Christian socialist) and Inazo Nitobe (1862-1933, first Deputy Secretary-General of the League of Nations).
A major post-war re-organization of the University led to the creation of the Faculty of Law and Literature in 1947, from which the sections of literature and economics have subsequently separated themselves in the 1950s.
The School of Law, as it is called now, covers a wide range of subjects from legal, administrative and political studies, and consists of six Departments and one Institute (with three research centers).
